Diet vs Nutrition

Diet vs Nutrition

A simple explanation of terms that often get tossed around: A Diet is what we eat. -> A Diet is not the restriction of “bad” foods, to drop a quick 15 lbs, even though the weightloss industry would like us to believe that this is the definition of “diet”. Nutrition is how we absorb, assimilate, metabolize, and utilize nutrients from the diet.  Nutrition is not merely a function of the “raw” materials we put in our mouth,  but a complex holistic process which includes: mental and emotional health ( which affect stress levels, metabolism and genetic expression ) physical movement patterns (or lack there of) aka. exercise genetic predispositions deficiencies/environmental exposure to toxins and EMFs basic elements of homeostasis: water, sun, air, grounding, sleep gratitude/blessing the food Though we all know how to “eat”,  our ability to truly nourish ourselves has become confused by advertisements, stress, and time restrictions that all seem to cater more to our cravings (sugars, caffeine, and salty foods) which ultimately deprive our bodies not only of the essential building blocks, but compromise optimal food consumption. Lastly, excretion, elimination and detoxification compliment to nutrition. Without addressing these, the benefits of nutrition go out of the window! Resetting our bodies through whole foods, mindful eating practices and gradual detoxification (like your car’s oil change) allows our bodies to heal, grow and create the energy we need to live life fully!   To your Health in 2017! Goodbye P.Z.A.

Goodbye P.Z.A.

Dear P.Z.A, Nearly 40 years after we first met, it is time to finally say good-bye. Believe me, I never thought it would end like this. My guts were tight, as I finally determined last night, that our chemistry just doesn’t match. Our future was written in the the dirty dishwater… Your attempts to persuade me of your authenticity in Italy, with a bottle of local wine, in high end establishments, and around our homely hearth kept me curious, wondering and interested for many years, and yet it always boiled down to the same ingredients that put a wrench in our evenings together. Like all long-term arrangements, a part of me is sad that we just couldn’t work out the details, but I’m done feeling bogged down, and sniffly after our encounters. Enough is enough. Trying to change your basic nature made you so unreliable, flaky and irritatingly dry. So much that even the things that always pleased me about you didn’t go down well anymore. So I release you to charm others around the dinner table, until they too may see your true nature. Good bye pizza (P.Z.A.), good-bye you glutenous, cheese, tomatoey friend. May your next incarnation be less sticky, less inflammatory, but just as appetizing~ yours truly, LLI      ...
Candida: Friend or Foe? (An easy home test and much more)

Candida: Friend or Foe? (An easy home test and much more)

Dear Elli, How do I know I have Candida, and how can I get rid of it? I hear this question so often that it is time to finally write down the information that I have gathered and share it publicly ! This is another TMI (too much info) kind of a Blog post, but there comes a point in our symptoms, where TMP (too much pain) outweighs TMI. Candida is found in up to 44% of urine samples. While we all have strains of candida in our body (it is a part of our biome- the balance between bacteria and yeasts that naturally occurs in our body), it is not supposed to show up in our urine. How can you check if you are the host to a burgeoning population of this Yeasty organism? Rapid Result Candida Spit Test: 1) Wake up (in the morning) 2) Rinse your mouth with water 3) Fill an extra glass of water 3) Spit at least a teaspoon size lump of mucous into the glass of water 4) Observe for 15-20 minutes (up to 30 min). If you have a Candida infection, at least one of the following indicators will appear: 1. Strings form- like LEGS, from the floating spit. 2. Strange-looking saliva at the bottom of the glass. 3. Cloudy specks suspended in the water. The more quickly the strings and cloudy specks are formed, the more your Candida overgrowth is. Lovely ?! WHAT does this mean and WHAT do I do now? Upon finding out that they have a fungal overgrowth, most people and medical practitioners immediately want to kill...
Dear Elli, Tooth Decay and Remineralization Part 1

Dear Elli, Tooth Decay and Remineralization Part 1

Dear Elli, Is there anything we can do to reverse tooth decay or preventatively protect our teeth other than flossing, brushing and staying away from sticky  dried fruits  and processed carbohydrates? Understanding some people’s great dislike of dental procedures ( myself included ) I hope you are inspired by this case study and the science behind it to bring new insight to your oral health care. CASE STUDY: Our 11 year old daughter recently lost a tooth. The new gap in her teeth revealed decay in the tooth right next door. Thinking that it was a permanent tooth, we scheduled an appointment with our dentist, who identifies herself as holistic/conservative aka. “Minimally invasive dentist”. Via x-ray we found out that the decayed tooth is a baby tooth, due to fall out in the next year or two, shifting the treatment plan from : Need Immediate restoration (in case of permanent tooth) to Remineralize, and Wait and See (baby tooth)   WHY REMINERALIZATION? I’ve been on the remineralization bandwagon for a few years now, after learning that we are all  mineral deficient because modern agricultural practices have resulted in nutrient soil depletion (yes, even in organic foods are not immutable to this), and our modern diet inhibits nutrient assimilation. Not only are the foods lower in nutrients, we can’t even metabolize them very effectively. GREAT. Our bodies are complex and need minerals for many  things, more than I care to list in this post. But ONE reason to consider adding trace minerals to your diet is: Minerals helps neutralize the pH of your blood (which is highly sensitive to fluctuations)....
Dear Elli~ Do Christianty and Yoga Mix?

Dear Elli~ Do Christianty and Yoga Mix?

A Question from a Friend in Mexico: “Dear Elli,  yesterday I read a Christian article that yoga is a dangerous practice for all Christians and should be avoided. I read the points and they didn’t convince me. Have you heard about it? What’s your opinion ?” My response: Aloha Amigo! I have been a yoga practicing “Christian” for many years of my life and such statements are usually based in ignorance. Yoga is the union with God. Yoga Asanas are postures and exercises which enhance flexibility, balance, strength and over all body awareness. (I don’t recall the bible ever banning stretches/exercise, otherwise all athletes would be going to “hell”). Stretching… ALL stretching, whether you are a gymnast, runner or soccer player opens up energy channels in the body. The intent of Yoga is to be mindful of your body, to breath and to use that awareness to experience, understand and expand your Self as well as your relationship to all of creation (creator). After Yoga, I feel relaxed yet focused, energetic, very present and full of love, all of these things are congruent with the Bible/Christianity.  Yoga is a preparation for mediation, which of course is a form of prayer. Praying to Jesus (God entity, or Nature) after practicing yoga is ideal because you are in an open state, which allows for a clearer connection to the divine. I hope this gives you some insight. My husband has been doing yoga  for over a year (amongst other energy medicine modalities) and has “healed” a condition that Western doctors said was incurable without surgery. Dear Elli, my uncle has Cancer…

Dear Elli, my uncle has Cancer…

What to do when the “C” diagnosis hits. It is probably impossible to find someone over the age of 30 who doesn’t known a person who currenlty has or has had cancer. When a relative (one that we rarely hear from) recently sent me a preliminary report, asking for advice, I sent him this insight: I am not sure what you know about “me” but I am a holistic nutritionist , life guide and integrative health practitioner so I see diagnosis and treatment very differently than standard western medicine (though I studied it and respect that it has a place in our healing process). Some of the “work” I do is very deep spiritual work, what some consider in the realm of mysticism/miracles or in scientific words, in the realm of quantum physics. From these reports it certainly looks like doctors have found “something” in your uncle’s lungs and possibly the liver (hepatic) on this preliminary test. I don’t know your uncle’s lifestyle, including his diet and exercise habits, nor do I know what is going on a deeper thought/emotional/spiritual level, but all those are really important factors in getting to the ROOT of the cancer. All diseases originate when some aspect of us is out of alignment with our true self. The disease is a reminder to get back to that authentic place, your flow of life, your Chi, your connection with God or Source! Doctors may take out the tumor, but all diseases and challenges point us to something deeper that is going on. When people who have cancer find that inner learning point, often during treatment...
